Job Summary

The Mechanical Technician is responsible for providing effective engineering support by applying advanced mechanical maintenance skills to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of manufacturing equipment. The role focuses on preventive maintenance, equipment diagnostics, continuous improvement, machinery safety, quality assurance, sustainability, and mentoring Technical Operators while supporting the achievement of production and business performance targets.

Mechanical Maintenance

  • Provide effective engineering support to achieve production performance targets.
  • Carry out planned and preventive maintenance activities with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Apply Condition Based Monitoring (CBM) techniques to improve equipment reliability.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults using appropriate tools, engineering drawings, manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Perform maintenance on both basic and complex mechanical equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ensure all machinery complies with Unilever Machinery Safety standards through proper maintenance and continuous improvement.
  • Safely isolate machinery from compressed air, electricity, steam, product lines, and other utilities using LOTOTO procedures.
  • Support continuous equipment improvement initiatives to enhance reliability and efficiency.

Safety, Quality & Environmental Compliance

  • Apply all safety and environmental procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Identify workplace hazards and follow appropriate risk control measures.
  • Reduce waste and minimize environmental impact through proper waste management practices.
  • Handle hazardous materials according to company procedures and safety standards.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with local quality procedures and manufacturing standards.
  • Protect product quality and support brand integrity through adherence to quality requirements.

Leadership & Continuous Improvement

  • Coach and mentor Technical Operators in mechanical engineering practices and Unilever Manufacturing System (UMS) techniques.
  • Lead by example while promoting teamwork and a positive factory culture.
  • Use production performance measures to identify and prioritize operational losses.
  • Apply Cost Deployment and Zero-Loss methodologies to eliminate recurring losses.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, quality, sustainability, and operational efficiency.

Operations & Problem Solving

  • Apply knowledge of the Unilever Manufacturing System (UMS) to improve production performance.
  • Identify, prioritize, and resolve mechanical problems using appropriate troubleshooting techniques.
  • Make technical decisions that support weekly production and maintenance plans.
  • Maintain awareness of changing business needs, product innovation, and manufacturing priorities.

Qualifications

  • Experience working as part of an extended team within the manufacturing sector.
  • Proven record of advanced maintenance experience.
  • Experience working in an FMCG manufacturing environment.
  • Experience as a member of a maintenance or project team.

Technical Skills

  • Strong mechanical maintenance and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, manuals, and technical documents.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance and Condition Based Monitoring (CBM).
  • Knowledge of machinery safety standards and LOTOTO procedures.
  • Technical design skills.
  • Digital awareness and technical computer skills.
