Nurse Supervisor

Job Summary

The Perioperative Nurse Manager is responsible for providing leadership, clinical oversight, and administrative management of the perioperative unit to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, and patient-centered surgical nursing care. The role involves leading nursing staff, developing and implementing policies and clinical standards, managing resources, promoting quality improvement initiatives, and fostering collaboration among multidisciplinary teams to achieve organizational and patient care objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership / Administrative Duties

• Lead the team in formulation, implementation, and evaluation of annual goals and objectives in accordance with surgical services and nursing division strategic objectives.
• Provide effective supervision to nursing staff and utilize learning opportunities for their development.
• Develop collaborative ways of working that link all contributors in the multidisciplinary team in patient care issues.
• Ensure staff coverage and skill mix for safe and effective patient care.
• Lead the team in development, implementation, and review of policies, procedures, protocols, clinical pathways, and care guidelines in line with identified standards.
• Be responsible for the recruitment, selection, and training of the nursing team.
• Develop and implement nursing retention strategies to reduce turnover of nursing staff.
• Undertake performance reviews of staff in the perioperative unit and develop action plans to ensure individual staff growth.
• Foster a pleasant working environment through a motivational leadership style to enhance job satisfaction among staff in the assigned unit.
• Prepare monthly and annual reports in accordance with set goals and objectives of the multidisciplinary team and communicate progress to the team.
• Put in place measures to control unit costs, stocks, and bad debts.
• Participate in the budget process and ensure efficient utilization of resources.
• Collaborate with the Marketing department to design and implement marketing strategies to increase business.
• Actively participate in Nursing Division activities such as the development of nursing policies, procedures, and quality indicators.

Clinical Practice

• Continuously initiate innovative and evidence-based strategies to improve patient care.
• Lead the development of a culture of safe perioperative practice in collaboration with clinical teams and actively participate in multidisciplinary clinical rounds.
• Together with the lead physician, lead the team in evaluation of care and outcomes through Mortality and Morbidity discussions, clinical incidence trends, and clinical indicators.
• Participate in the establishment of standards of care with unit staff and monitor delivery of care according to established standards.
• In collaboration with the Director of Surgical Services, foster the development of nurses to their maximum potential through educational and training opportunities and exposure to appropriate learning forums.
• Ensure a system is in place to monitor nurses' clinical knowledge, skills, and competencies.
• Employ effective management strategies to support staff in enhancing safe patient care.
• Promote nursing research and act as a resource person for staff in the perioperative unit.
• Develop and maintain effective internal and external networks to improve nursing practice.

Risk Management and Customer Care

• Be responsible for staff, patient, and family satisfaction with perioperative services.
• Respond to client complaints in a timely manner by resolving issues or alerting the relevant personnel.
• Ensure program-based client satisfaction surveys are conducted, monitor trends of incidents and complaints, and take appropriate action.
• Inform the CDO and relevant Director of high-risk patients, incidents, and sentinel events.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BScN).
• Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing experience in Operating Room nursing within an acute care hospital.
• Demonstrated expert knowledge and skills in Operating Theatre nursing.
