Job Summary

The Fibre Optic Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing routine and corrective maintenance, fault analysis, and network quality improvement activities for fibre optic infrastructure. The role ensures high availability, reliability, and quality of fibre network services through preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and continuous monitoring of network performance.

Job Purpose / Role Intent

To successfully undertake all activities related to routine maintenance, corrective maintenance, root cause analysis, and network quality initiatives for the fibre optic network while ensuring compliance with service availability and quality standards.

Organization Structure

Reports to the relevant Network Operations or Fibre Maintenance Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, test, and repair malfunctioning fibre network infrastructure through scheduled preventive maintenance activities.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot optical cables, closure kits, ducts, and manholes.
  • Generate network performance indicators and conduct inspections to ensure fibre optic systems operate without faults.
  • Perform regular inspections of assigned systems and repair identified defects.
  • Prepare and maintain system records, technical documentation, and network diagrams.
  • Perform fibre optic maintenance activities including point-of-break analysis, link analysis, splicing, core alignment, and splice quality validation.
  • Use appropriate fibre optic tools and techniques to maintain network quality and reliability.

Principal Outputs / Performance Indicators

  • Achievement of assigned performance KPIs.
  • Maintain fibre segment availability of 98%.
  • Achieve 80% of Trouble Tickets (TTs) resolution within SLA requirements.
  • Ensure high-quality fibre splices with a slope of less than 0.25dB/km within network segments.

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, or related fields.
  • Training in optical fibre technology.
  • Higher Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering is an advantage.
  • Certification in fibre technology is required.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in fibre maintenance.
  • Proven experience in trend analysis, root cause analysis, identifying key issues, and implementing corrective actions to improve network availability and service quality.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of fibre optics maintenance tools and techniques.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong customer focus.
  • Good planning and organizing skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work at heights (with certification), in confined spaces, and under different weather conditions.

The position operates in both office and field environments, requiring interaction with multiple teams, customers, contractors, and network stakeholders. The role may involve working in remote locations and various operational conditions.

  • Balances preventive maintenance schedules with urgent fault restoration activities.
